The Life of the Military Engineer: A Brief Introduction
A military engineer is primarily in charge of the design and construction of offensive, defensive, and logistical structures intended for warfare. The military engineer is also in charge of the layout, placement, maintenance and dismantling of defensive minefields and the dismantling of enemy minefields as well as the construction and destruction of bridges and buildings.
His role is varied and there are many types of engineer, in some cases an engineer may even be required to destroy something which he designed and built, such is the nature of his work. In some countries, the current military will inlcude engineering units in weapon design and procurement as well as non-military civil engineering units which can deal with issues such as flood control and river damming and navigation. In contemporary times, a pioneer that usually operates during battle and under fire is called a combat engineer.
The ancient Romans had a dedicated corps of military engineering specialists among their standing army. The Roman engineers were dubbed the architecti. Even in the Republican era, Roman military pioneering was far more advanced than its contemporaries and the scale of feats such as the six-week construction of a thirty mile long double-wall around Alesia in 52BC was huge.
In ancient times, fortifications were assaulted by siege engines which regularly included huge projectile devices or tall moving towers that could offer an attacking force protection while positioning them above the highest point of the fortification’s walls.
Defensive fortifications are built to avoid breech of inner position by siege infantry and, in terms of minor defensive locations, these may only consist of configurations of simple walls and ditches. The design principle is to slow down the advance of attackers so they can be attacked from defensive positions. The majority of larger installations are not merely made of a single structure but are usually a series of concentric fortifications of increasing strength.
The placement, maintenance and dismantling of minefields is usually considered a defensive task for the pioneer while the clearing of enemy minefields is an offensive task.
When a defending force retreats, it is more often the case that they will use a scorched earth policy, destroying anything that may be of use to the enemy, particularly hardware, bridges and structures. A retreating force may also wish to leave booby traps for enemy soldiers to contend with and this is another application for the pioneer.
The Alcohol Related Deaths and Alcohol Related Problems That Are Linked To Irresponsible and Hazardous Drinking
How many individuals lose their lives every year because of drinking problems? How many people lose their lives each year from a condition that is 100% preventable, such as alcohol poisoning? How many people are the victims of alcohol related crime or violence each and every year? How many individuals get injured or lose their lives in alcohol related traffic accidents every year? How many people’s lives are cut short due to abusive and unhealthy drinking? How many children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome? On an annual basis, how many alcoholics fail to get the professional alcohol treatment they require? How many people experience alcohol related depression? How many individuals face severe consequences in their lives because they received a “drunk driving” conviction? How many junior high, high school, and college students lose their lives every year due to an alcohol overdose?
Why Would Anyone Want to Drink in an Irresponsible and Hazardous Manner?
So what’s the point in asking these questions? Basically to highlight the destructive and devastating nature of careless and abusive drinking. Indeed, and based on the above questions, I wonder why anyone would choose to drink in a hazardous and abusive manner.
Stated more forcefully, with the host of employment difficulties, health problems, financial issues, relationship dilemmas, and legal proceedings that are associated with alcohol dependency and chronic alcohol abuse, why would any individual with good reasoning skills want to drink in an excessive and hazardous manner? If truth be told when some of the above topics are examined more closely, hazardous and careless drinking makes even less sense and becomes more illogical.
Wouldn’t you think that alcoholics would be able to see some of the alcohol symptoms that they manifest? In a similar manner doesn’t it seem reasonable to think that more families would involve themselves in an alcohol intervention for the individual in the household who is an alcoholic or an alcohol abuser? Not only this but wouldn’t you think that people who drink abusively would try to learn more about their drinking behavior by reading about various alcohol related statistics?
After reviewing the alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency research, the point is so critical that it needs to be said again: With all of the dangerous and debilitating effects that are directly or indirectly interlinked with continuous and repetitive alcoholism and alcohol abuse, why would any individual want to engage in hazardous drinking?
What Can be Done About the Widespread Nature of Alcohol Addiction and Alcohol Abuse in the U.S.?
So what can be done about the widespread nature of alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction in the U.S.?
- Our students need more meaningful and more relevant preventative and educational approaches and methods so that more students at all grade levels, including those at college, are “reached.
- With a similar line of reasoning, our students need to learn how to become problem solvers in life rather than gravitating to the ”quick fix” and the “instant gratification” of a drug or alcohol abuse “buzz” or “high”.
- Individuals who are alcohol addicts or alcohol abusers need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask why they are not getting the professional alcohol rehab they require.
- Society needs to get the message to more people about the unhealthy and debilitating outcomes of unhealthy and excessive drinking.
There’s Room For Hope if Those Who Engage in Abusive and Hazardous Drinking Can Become Encouraged to Get the Alcohol Rehabilitation They Need
There’s a lot of room for hope and optimism if people can start drinking in moderation and those who engage in excessive and hazardous drinkingcan become persuaded to get the alcohol treatment they require. Indeed, why put your loved ones through turmoil, pain, and suffering because of your abusive and hazardous drinking when you have the power to control your life by drinking in moderation or even quitting drinking if you can’t control your drinking behavior?
